PUN-KIN PIE

As we were making our way through the grocery last week, Callan asked if we could make a Pun-kin Pie. I have only recently aquired a taste for it, but he has LOVED it since his first bite...OH... last year, and true to his character... HE DID NOT FORGET!

So, WHY NOT? We made Pun-kin Pie while the little bro and "sister" were asleep last Monday. It made 2, so Callan wanted to take one to share with his friends at Mom's Day Out. I am not sure they all found the joy in it that he did, but it does not matter... he was PROUD!!!
(Notice that he had to wear an apron... he dug this one out... the Home Depot work apron... it cracked me up...only in my house would baking be done in a HD Apron)

All the ingredients...

Cracking the egg...

Mixing it up...

Before baking...

Ahh... the best part of baking... the taste test!

What did you do today?

I contacted my Congressmen and UNICEF. Honestly, I am pretty proud of myself. I know I probably would not have done it had I not been prompted (and been given a good sample of what to say) by the adoption community. I have not ever done anything like it. I vote, I listen... now it is their turn. I really pray that they help... that they stand up... that they listen.

I started with Bob Corker. I called his office in D.C. I do not know if he was "in" or not... I just asked to leave a message. The man does not have voice mail. I guess I can see why. So I began to tell the lady why I was calling. She pretty much stopped me and told me she would add my concerns to the list she had. I asked her if she would like my name... she told me she did not need it. Well, that was not enough for me.... so I pulled up Corker's web site and sent him and e-mail telling him I tried to call and what happened. Then I proceeded with my letter. It is not much, but my message went across.
Senator Corker-
I just called your office and because I could not leave a message or speak to you, I wanted to send a note. ( They would not even let me leave my name).
As a Senator that I just voted for, I am asking for your help. I just brought home my daughter from Guatemala this summer. She is the joy of our lives. The things going on in Guatemala are scary and disheartening to say the least. I cannot imagine that other families would miss out on the blessing from God we just received.

I am asking you to sign the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Instituted (CCAI) sponsored letter to President Oscar Berger.

I am asking you to sign the Joint Council sponsored letter to UNICEF.

The Guatemalan government has announced that all adoptions with the US will be suspended on January 1, 2008, and that there will be no "grandfathering" of adoptions already in process. It has been indicated that more than 5000 children already in process, will be affected by this. If these children are not allowed to be adopted, they will languish in institutions or foster care.

Please get involved and sign the sponsored letters to the President of Guatemala and UNICEF. These letters ask that all adoptions in-process as of Jan 1, 2008 will be allowed to process under the existing notorial laws.

THANK YOU for your time!

I then did the same things for Lamar Alexander, Lincoln Davis, and UNICEF in the US and Guatemala ( though the letters a little different). If you feel in your heart that you want to be heard as well, but you have never done it before... it is your turn... stand up... be heard... copy my letter :)... whatever it takes. Let's save these children in Guatemala. Can you imagine if it were Eliza? And YOU had not been blessed by her?

FUN STUFF

I found this( you can click on "this" to go to the site) not too long ago in one of those envelopes of offers that comes in the mail. I have had so much fun with it. It is really reasonable! I have made return address labels, and I just made gift tags for our Christmas gifts.

***Sorry, I tried to make it bigger and it just would not grow!
*** I fixed the link... but the first time I clicked it... it did not go... the second time it did. If you cannot get there type in www.vistaprint.com/vp9071

Pokémon

To Pokémon or NOT to Pokémon... that is the question.

You see when your kids are at your home, at your mercy... you can allow or not allow anything you choose. If you do not want them doing something, you stop it... change the channel, divert their attention... whatever. THEN they begin school. It is a whole new world out there, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Baylor has friends at school that play/ collect Pokémon cards. At first it seems like it is harmless. But, because I do not know anything about Pokémon, we researched it on the computer. We came up with a good site, a site that explained Pokémon and its game. You see the premise is to be a character who captures other characters through casting spells. You also must gain powers and some of these powers include the power to evolve yourself into what you want to be...stronger, fiercer, mightier.

I know that many of you out there might say... it is just a game. But, we just do not feel like anything in our 7 year olds life is "just" anything. EVERYTHING has the potential to capture his young heart and mind. We want him to grow with a firm foundation and a belief that God made him who he is, and what the Bible says is true.

The Bible says "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he grows old he will not depart from it." It is our job now to teach him and train him, so that as he gets older, perhaps the paths will be more clear. If we make the paths muddy now... how will he ever know?

Baylor is terribly intrigued by Pokémon. His friends love it and talk about it constantly... thus he wants to participate. Based on our research, we have told him, NO! This week was book fair at school. We allowed Baylor to take some of his money he has saved to buy a book. What does he come home with? A Pokémon book. Not a story book, but a book that explains each character, how they work and the powers they can attain. He thought if he bought it and got it home, we would not make him return it... wrong...but it gets worse. His friends have also evidently been funding his game. They have been giving him cards so that he could play along. We stumbled upon his secret stash on Monday. We were disappointed to say the least. Honestly, I felt like I was looking into my teenagers eyes having just found his secret stash of... you name it... whatever teenagers hide.

After a very long talk and some appropriate punishment he came to the conclusion that he must take the book back and return the cards. It was hard... I know it was. But I praised him for it. Baylor has always been a leader among his peers and this time he just pain followed. He understands why we say no... he understands that not everyone thinks it is bad, and that is okay. But we have to make choices for our family... and this is one we are making. It is in moments like these that I would like to hand in my mommy card... why can't it always be easy?

A little randomness...

At his game on Thursday, Baylor got the game ball... he was so proud ( as were we). This boy is all about some baseball and has a passion for it. He has even come up with a computer game/stuffed animal ( much like webkins) that is all about baseball. He asked me if I could sew the "men"... but I have no idea who would create the game.

Callan has finally had an *AAHAA* moment about bubble blowing. He finally learned the art of the gentle, not too close, blow.

Silas... has come into his own. This is he newest expression ( I guess it goes along with the "you don't tell me no" that uttered from his mouth to his daddy last night... I do not think he will make that mistake again). The picture does not do it justice... it cracks us up.

And our little princesea... she had baby dedication at church yesterday. I am still collecting pictures for it because my camera battery was dead. But a friend took this one. Eliza is not feeling well right now... she has the runny nose crud. But she is still the best baby ever.

SCARY THINGS

There are some scary things going on in Guatemala right now regarding adoption... I wish I knew how to sum it up but it has already been summed up better than I could have here please go there and read what you can do. Cheri is a mom adopting from Guatemala who received her referral about a week after we got Eliza's. She has been in Guatemala fostering HER DAUGHTER since December (I think). I do not even want to go into details about what could happen if all this stuff takes place, but you can do something. If you are adopting from Guatemala, have a heart for adoption or even have a friend *AHEM- ME* adopting, you can help.
